To Friend Or Not To Friend

It is a common fear among users of Facebook and other social media Web sites – how to deal with a friend request from your boss or employee. A new survey by Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Project finds that 56% of Americans say it is irresponsible to be friends with a boss and 62% say it is wrong to be friends with an employee. But 76% believe it is acceptable to be friends with a workplace peer. Other findings:

· When using social media at work, 73% say it is not appropriate to update your Facebook status, 82% say you should not upload photos, 72% believe tweeting is wrong, and 79% say it is not acceptable to watch online videos. However, 66% say it is fine to check your personal e-mail while at work.

· Americans are split on whether companies should review the social media profiles of job candidates; 52% say it is appropriate and 48% say it is unacceptable.

· More than 40% of parents believe it is irresponsible to post photos of children online; 31% monitor their children’s Facebook accounts, and almost 70% are friends with their children on Facebook or MySpace; 72% limit the time their children spend on social media networks.

· More than 80% of parents say that teachers should not interact with students online, but they are split when it comes to whether social media should be used as evidence to punish students’ behavior.

· Nearly three-quarters of Americans agree that it is “egotistical and a waste of time” to develop a Facebook page for a pet.

Ole Miss Needs A Mascot

Colonel Reb shall not rise again. The University of Mississippi dumped the mascot – a caricature of a white plantation owner – in a 2003 effort to distance the school from Old South stereotypes. It’s been without a mascot ever since. A vote tonight could change that. Students will have only two choices in the online referendum: yes, replace the colonel with something else – perhaps a riverboat gambler or a colonial soldier – or no, remain the only school in the Southeastern Conference without a mascot. Ole Miss is battling with how to retain tradition while shedding symbols of Old South. In 1997, the school ended the waving of Confederate flags at sporting events. Then Colonel Reb was booted off the field. Last year, the band stopped playing the fight song, “From Dixie With Love,” to discourage the fan chant, “The South will rise again.”

5 Things That Will Make You Happier

Are you happy? Are you really, genuinely happy? With families in turmoil and the economy a mess, the pursuit of happiness is sometimes easier said than done. Some scientists argue that happiness is largely determined by genetics, health and other factors mostly outside of our control. But recent research suggests people actually can take charge of their own happiness and boost it by doing certain things. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, reviewed 51 studies that tested attempts to increase happiness through different types of positive thinking, and found that these practices can significantly enhance well-being and well-feeling. Here are five very simple things you can do to improve happiness.

1. Be Grateful: – Some study participants were asked to write letters of gratitude to people who had helped them in some way. The study found that people reported a lasting increase in happiness – over weeks and even months – after implementing the habit. What’s even more surprising: Sending the letter is not necessary! Even when people wrote letters but never sent them, they still reported feeling happier afterwards!

2. Be Optimistic: - Another practice that helps is optimistic thinking. Study participants were asked to visualize an ideal future – for example, living with a loving and supportive partner, or finding a job that was fulfilling – and describe the image in a journal entry. After doing this for a few weeks, these people too reported increased feelings of well-being.

3. Count Your Blessings: - People who practice writing down three good things that have happened to them every week showed a significant boost in happiness. It seems the act of focusing on the positive helps people remember reasons to be glad.

4. Use Your Strengths: - Another study asked people to identify their greatest strengths, and then to try to use these strengths in new ways. For example, someone who says they have a good sense of humor could try telling jokes to lighten up business meetings or cheer up sad friends. Doing that helps you as much as the other person.

5. Commit Acts Of Kindness: - It turns out helping others also helps ourselves. As we’ve seen from the five ways to be happier, there is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving. Those behind this list also have an iPhone app called Live Happy that you can download on iTunes to boost your well-being.

More Booze, More Brawls

Researchers who studied crime stats and alcohol licensing data from Cincinnati have discovered the more bars, restaurants and other alcohol sales sites in a neighborhood, the higher the level of violence. The Indiana University study also found an association between high assault rates and stores that sell alcohol. Liquor stores “appear to be associated with about 25% of simple assaults and about one-third of aggravated assaults,” researchers said. Broken down, one store that sells liquor per square mile creates 2.3 more simple assaults and 0.6 more aggravated assaults per square mile. Adding one bar per square mile would lead to 1.35 more simple assaults, while adding one restaurant per square mile that sells alcohol would lead to 1.15 more simple assaults.

Dummies Don’t Sleep

A new survey finds that people who take a mid-afternoon siesta may improve their smarts. While the findings are preliminary, the research suggests an afternoon nap can help humans to remember more. A group of students from the University of California at Berkeley were split into two groups. One group took afternoon naps while the other did not. Those who did not take the nap performed about 10% worse than those who napped. Researchers also said that a person’s ability to learn declines about 10% between noon and 6 p.m., but in their study, nappers were able to overcome the “dumb” period.

Auction For Nintendo Game System Reaches $13,105

A mother hawking an original Nintendo Entertainment System and a handful of games on eBay has unwittingly made a small fortune. The auction for a vintage NES with a controller and five games started at just $9.999, but finished at an unheard of $13,105. Until Sony’s PlayStation surpassed it in the late 1990s, the NES held the world record for video game consoles sold worldwide. Handhelds like the Game Boy and DS aside, the NES still ranks fourth overall, after the PS1, PS2, and Wii. Not bad for a console that was launched on October 15, 1985 and originally sold for $199.99.

McMurray Wins Daytona 500

Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500 yesterday, holding off Dale Earnhardt Jr. in one drama-filled NASCAR season opener. The race at Daytona International Speedway was halted for over an hour with 78 laps remaining while workers repaired a pothole that developed in the track. The hole reappeared 39 laps later, forcing another 45-minute delay. Greg Biffle came in third, followed by Clint Bowyer and David Reutimann. Meanwhile, Danica Patrick’s NASACAR debut didn’t go as well as she would have liked. Patrick was involved in a 12-car crash on the 69th lap of the Drive4COPD 300 Nationwide Series race Saturday at Daytona International and was unable to finish the race. She came in 35th among the 43 drivers.

Frisbee Inventor Dies

Back in the day it was called the “Pluto Platter.” That was the original name for what we know today as the Frisbee. The man credited with inventing it died last week of cancer. Walter Frederick Morrison was 90. Morrison got the idea for the Frisbee in 1937 after someone tossed a tin lid to him and he watched it sail through the air. He sold the concept in 1957 and it went on to become one of America’s biggest hits in back yards, beaches and college campuses. More than 200 million Frisbees have been sold around the world. Wham-O, the company that owns the rights to the Frisbee, has a tribute to Morrison on its Web site at www.wham-o.com.

VDay Funny

A very shy guy goes into a bar on Valentine's Day night and sees a beautiful woman. After a long struggle with his shyness, he finally managed to walk over and ask her politely, “Um, would you mind if I give you company?”

She made a furious face and yelled at the top of her lungs, “How dare you asked me to sleep with you tonight?”

Everyone in the pub started staring at the man, who was completely embarrassed. After a few minutes, the woman walked over to him and apologized. “You see, I am a student of psychology and studying how people respond to embarrassing situations. I am sorry but I was just doing my experiment!”

So the young man suddenly yelled, “What do you mean $200?”

30 Pounds Of Pot Found In Jesus Picture

Well, nothing is sacred anymore. A pot bust along the U.S.-Mexico border revealed 30 pounds of marijuana stuffed into framed pictures of Jesus Christ, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said. The agency said it isn’t the first time they’ve seen religious items used to smuggle drugs. A 22-year-old woman in a Jeep from Juarez, Mexico, told border patrol officers that she had nothing to declare besides the framed art. The officers checked out the vehicle with a drug-sniffing dog, Cesar, who alerted them to the drugs.

Chilling Aerial Photos Of 9/11 Attack Released

Hundreds of aerial photos of the collapsing World Trade Center were released this week, offering a rare and chilling view from the sky of the burning twin towers and the shroud of dust that settled over Manhattan. The images were taken from a police helicopter – the only photographers allowed in the airspace near the skyscrapers on September 11, 2001. They were obtained by ABC after it filed a Freedom of Information Act request last year with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the federal agency that investigated the collapse. The chief curator of the planned September 11 museum said the pictures were “a phenomenal body of work.” ABC obtained 2,779 pictures on nine CDs.

Bored To Death

Boredom can be bad for your health – even deadly. According to researchers at University college London, boredom itself won’t kill you – but it could be a symptom of other risky behavior like drinking, smoking, taking drugs or having a psychological problem. Researchers said that based on their findings, it wouldn’t be surprising if people who are bored are more susceptible to heart attacks. Depression has long been linked as a risk factor for heart disease. They believe it is possible that when people are bored, dangerous hormones are released in the body that stress the heart.

Crib Recall After 3 Deaths

The government announced yesterday the recall of more than 500,000 drop-side cribs sold at Buy Buy Baby, Kmart, Walmart and other stores after the death of three infants. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says plastic hardware on Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS cribs can break and allow the drop side to detach. In addition, the mattress supports can break away from the crib frames. Both defects create gaps where a small child can be trapped and suffocate or strangle. Find out more online at www.cpsc.gov.

Super Bowl Most Watched TV Show Ever

Sunday’s Super Bowl between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts was watched by more than 106 million people, surpassing the 1983 finale of “M-A-S-H” to become the most-watched program in television history. Nielsen estimated that 106.5 million people watched the Saints upset the Colts. The “M-A-S-H” finale had 105.97 million viewers, but it was in an era when there were fewer TV sets. The game also broke the previous record viewership for a Super Bowl – last year’s game between Arizona and Pittsburgh, in which 98.7 million people watched. This year’s game also set a record with nearly 48 minutes of commercials – the most for any Super Bowl. Kantar Media says the amount of ads that aired on CBS was nearly 3 minutes longer than last year’s total, the previous record holder. Commercials typically come in 30-second blocks – which sold this year for between $2.5 million and $3 million. But Kantar says seven of this year’s 66 ads were just 15 seconds long, the most since 2002.

Beer For Your Bones

The next time you tip back another brewsky, remember it could be making your bones stronger. A new analysis of 100 commercial beers shows the beverage is a significant source of dietary silicon, a key ingredient for bone health. Though past research has suggested beer is good for your bones, little was known about how silicon levels were involved. So a pair of researchers ran a chemical analysis of beer’s raw ingredients, using 100 commercially-sold beers found in the grocery store. After running a battery of tests, they found that it’s true, your bones are better and stronger after drinking beer. While there is no official recommendation for just how much beer you should consume without going overboard, the average American consumes about 20 to 50 milligrams of silicon each day. That’s seems to be enough to boost bone buildup.

Craig Morgan, "This Ain't Nothin"

Here is the video for Craig Morgans new song, "This Ain't Nothin". Let us know what you think!

Enjoy!

Snowpocalypse Seen From Space

The weekend storm that buried much of the Eastern U.S. with as much as 38 inches of snow provided a wild satellite image from space. The image reveals how the storm swept through the mid-Atlantic region but largely spared New York City. The landscape is largely snow-free from just north of Manhattan. Nicknamed “Snowpocalypse” and “Snowmageddon,” the blizzard dumped record-breaking snow in many cities.

Super Saints Beat Colts 31-17 In Super Bowl 44

The New Orleans Saints put the hurt on Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts last night, rallying from behind to win the Super Bowl 31-17. MVP honors went to Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who tied a Super Bowl record with 32 completions, the last 2-yard slant to Jeremy Shockey for the winning points with 5:42 remaining. He was 32 for 39 for 288 yards. The Saints (16-3) won three postseason games this winter after winning only two in the previous 42 years. They beat Arizona, Minnesota and Indianapolis (16-3) – all division winners – for their first title, scoring 107 points and allowing only 59. The championship came 4 1/2 years after Hurricane Katrina nearly wiped out New Orleans, making the Saints nomads for the 2005 season.

Bob asked his wife, “Where do you want to go for Valentine’s Day?”

It warmed his heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation. “Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!” she said.

So Bob suggested, “How about the kitchen?”

Super Bowl Advertising

The majority of Super Bowl viewers enjoy the game’s ads more than the action on the field, according to a recent survey from Nielsen. Fifty-one percent of those questioned said they most enjoy the commercials compared to the Super Bowl game itself; 49% said that they enjoy the game more than the ads. The poll was one of many Nielsen findings in a study of the trends and effectiveness of paid Super Bowl advertising. Other insights:

· Ads that run early in the game are better remembered and better liked than those airing later in the game.

· Traffic to advertiser Web sites spikes on the day after the Super Bowl.

· In the last five years, the biggest Super Bowl advertiser has been Anheuser-Busch, which spent over $100 million on its Bud and Bud Light brands alone.

In the last five years, more money was spent on Bud Light than any other brand. The top five brands spent a total of $189.7 million on the Super Bowl over the last five years, accounting for 13% of entire network TV ad spend during that time. Over the last five years, the top five brands spent:

1. Bud Light: $59.1 million on Super Bowl advertising, compared to $531 million spent on all network TV advertising from 2005-2009 (11.1% of its total ad spending budget).

2. Budweiser: $42.4 million on the Super Bowl, compared to $330.1 million overall (12.8% of total ad spending budget).

3. Coca-Cola: $34.1 million on the Super Bowl, compared to $343.1 million overall (9.9% of total ad spending budget).

4. CareerBuilder: $30.8 million on the Super Bowl, compared to $102.9 million overall (29.9% of total ad spending budget).

5. Pepsi: $23.4 million on the Super Bowl, compared to $122.4 million overall (19.1% of total ad spending budget).

· Movies and beer were the top Super Bowl advertisers over the past five years. During that time, movie studios spent $117.4 million; last year alone they promoted eight different movies, representing $42 million in ad spending. Beer brands spent $114.2 million over the last five years, followed by automotive ($108.6 million), soft drinks ($92.1 million), and Web site employment services ($36.8 million).

· In terms of on-field signage, apparel logos, and any other space where brands are highlighted during the action of the game rather than during the commercial breaks, Gatorade scored the most screen time last year, with 191 on-screen exposures, for a total of 11 minutes and 44 seconds. Gatorade was followed by Reebok with 282 exposures (8 minutes, 21 seconds), Motorola with 165 exposures (5:36), Riddell with 93 exposures (2:31), and Bridgestone with 11 exposures (2:16).

Office Misfits

According to a new CareerBuilder survey, 39% of workers said they feel that they don’t fit in with their colleagues. Comparing genders, more women (42%) than men (37%) report they feel they don’t always fit in with their cube mates. When it comes to industries, health care, sales and professional and business services top the fields where workers feel that they don’t fit in with their colleagues, followed by leisure/hospitality and IT. Workers shared some of the craziest things their co-workers have done on the job:

· Co-worker ate the cheese off the pizza box at a company meeting.

· Co-worker talked openly about flatulence.

· Co-worker in the cubicle next to me wears 3-D glasses with the lenses removed.

· Co-worker repeatedly bangs a mallet on the table for no apparent reason.

· Co-worker whistles 8 hours a day.

· Former boss brought a baby sippy cup to a meeting and started drinking out of it.

· Co-worker cleaned fingernails using a counterpart’s business card while sitting in the office.

CareerBuilder’s 2010 Big Game TV advertising highlights workers who are questioning their current jobs because of workplace behavior. The TV ads can be viewed at www.careerbuilder.com/TV.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever observed a co-worker do?

Groundhog Day Info

Tomorrow is Groundhog Day! The 124th trek to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, for Punxsutawney Phil’s official prognostication begins at 3 a.m. [ET] with live entertainment, fireworks and other activities. Phil’s official prediction will be at daybreak. The men who call themselves the “Inner Circle” say Phil speaks to them in “groundhogese,” and they translate the rodent’s words to the world. Here are some other fun facts from the Official Site of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club:

History of Groundhog Day:

· The first legendary trek to Gobbler’s Knob was in 1887. In early observances, the groundhog’s predictions were conducted in private wooded areas that neighbor the town. Presently, Phil makes his prediction in Gobbler’s Knob in front of tens of thousands of visitors and a global audience. Members of the Inner Circle, a mystical group of keepers sworn to uphold the grand tradition of Groundhog Day, coax Phil from his hole and announce Phil’s prediction. If Phil sees his shadow, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of winter and returns to his hole; if not, spring is just around the corner.

Phamous Punxsutawney Phil Phacts:

· During Prohibition, Phil threatened to impose 60 weeks of winter if he wasn’t permitted a drink.

· In 1981 Phil wore a yellow ribbon in honor of the American hostages in Iran.

· Phil traveled to Washington, D.C., in 1986 to meet with President Reagan.

· In 1993, Columbia Pictures released the movie “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray. Since then, record crowds numbering as high as 30,000 have visited Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney!

· In 2001, Phil’s prediction was shown live on the JumboTron at Times Square in New York City.

· Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell attended Groundhog Day ceremonies in 2003, making him the first sitting governor ever to do so.

Here are some other interesting FAQs from groundhog.org:

· Punxsutawney Phil’s full name is “Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinaire.” It was so proclaimed by the “Punxsutawney Groundhog Club” in 1887, the same year they declared Punxsutawney to be the weather capital of the world.

· There has only been one Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity from drinking “groundhog punch,” a secret recipe. Phil takes one sip every summer at the Groundhog Picnic and it magically gives him seven more years of life.

· As the story goes, Punxsutawney Phil was named after King Phillip. Prior to being called Phil, he was called Br’er Groundhog.

· Since Phil’s first trek to Gobbler’s Knob in 1887, he has seen his shadow 98 times, no shadow 15 times, and no record 10 times. He saw his shadow last year.

If you can’t be there to celebrate with Phil, there will be live video streamed on www.visitpa.com/GroundHog.
