Surviving Hurricane Season

Hurricanes can cause millions of dollars in damage and threaten lives in coastal states. Even inland states can feel the effects of a hurricane’s power. Fortunately, you can take steps to prepare your home to weather hurricane season. Lou Manfredini, Ace Hardware’s home expert, offers some safety tips for anyone living or traveling in hurricane prone areas.

· Keep your home and belongings safe by making sure to store all items off the ground on shelves so that water doesn’t damage them.
· Block all entryways of your home to prevent floodwaters from getting in. Manfredini recommends positioning sand bags around the entryways of the house.
· Store important documents (birth certificates, insurance policies, etc) in plastic, zip-lock bags in an easily-accessible location in case you have to evacuate your home.
· If you decide to stay at home during the storm, you should gather your family in an interior room without windows, such as the basement or a hallway. It’s recommended that you use a battery-operated radio for storm updates and safety issues. There are also solar-powered options.
