Is Anyone Normal Anymore?
Ever notice people are just acting different, strange and bizarre? An updated edition of a mental health bible for doctors may include diagnoses for “disorders” such as toddlers tantrums and binge eating, experts say, and could mean that soon no-on will be classed as normal. Leading mental health experts warned yesterday that a new edition of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is being revised for publication in 2013, could devalue the seriousness of mental illness and label almost everyone as having some kind of disorder.
New 3D Camcorder For Consumers
The problems of what to watch on a 3D TV will be yours to solve with Panasonic's camcorder for families to film birthdays, baby’s first steps and weddings, all in 3D. The new camcorder starts at around $2,000 and enable users to shoot in 3D. The 3D camcorders go on sale in Japan on August 20th, and will be available in the U.S. later in the year. The technology behind the 3D works by sending a different image to the right eye and left eye, just like the human brain constructs an illusion of depth and perspective with images that come in from the left eye and the right eye. Although some 3D technology doesn’t require special glasses, the one Panasonic plans to unveil will require special 3D glasses.
Unclaimed Winning Ticket
An Illinois Lottery player has just a few days before it’s gone for good. State lottery officials say a second-place winning Mega Millions ticket will expire Friday. If that ticket isn’t presented before the deadline the winner can’t collect the $250,000 in prize money. The ticket was for the July 31, 2009, drawing and was sold at a 7-Eleven in Des Plaines. If no one claims the lotto prize, the money goes into a state education fund.

Money Or Sex?
Which is more important, saving money or having more sex? Shortcuts.com and AllYou.com asked that very question and saving money easily trumped more sex. Survey respondents said the biggest challenge to saving money is living paycheck to paycheck (39%), followed by earning enough cash (35%). Given the following choices, 57% of adults said saving $50 a week was the most important, while 31% said dropping one size in their clothing. Only 6% said having more sex was more important than saving money; another 6% said one extra hour in the day would be their No. 1 choice for the above.

WTC Ship Found
Workers at the World Trade Center site are excavating a 32-foot-long ship hull that apparently was used in the 18th century as part of the fill that extended lower Manhattan into the Hudson River. Archaeologists say the ship likely dated back at least 200 years when part of the river was filled in with trash, debris and wooden beams in order to expand a fast-growing Manhattan. The discovery of the ship, however, did not deter construction from moving forward as archaeologists rushed to the site to take measurements, but the wood may start to deteriorate as it is further exposed to the elements. Pieces of the ship will be sent to a laboratory to see how old the ship actually is.
BP Says Oil Leak Stopped
BP announced yesterday that it had capped its hemorrhaging well, at least temporarily, marking the first time in 86 days that oil was not gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Oil stopped flowing around 3:25 p.m. [ET] when the last of several valves was closed on a 75-ton cap at the top of the well, said Kent Wells, a senior vice president for BP. However, even in the most optimistic case, the spill is far from over. There are still millions of barrels of oil out in the gulf and months of work missing for fishermen and shrimpers, and inestimable harm is still being inflicted on wildlife throughout the food chain along the Gulf coast. But for the first time since an explosion on the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed 11 workers April 20th and unleashed the spill 5,000 feet beneath the water’s surface, no oil was flowing into the Gulf. Between 93.5 million and 184.3 million barrels of crude spilled into the ocean.

Fix Your iPhone 4 With Duct Tape
As ridiculous as it sounds, the problems widely publicized with the iPhone 4 can be fixed by simply using duct tape. “it may not be pretty, but it works,” according to Consumer Reports. The patch – which sounds like it’d be more appropriate for use in the garage than for the iPhone, apparently fixes a problems with the iPhone 4’s metal antenna. Consumer Reports found that people who hold the iPhone 4 in a way that covers up an antenna connector on the phone’s lower left side will experience reception problems and dropped calls. But if you slap a piece of duct tape over the antenna connection, the reception problems go away. Consumer Reports is not recommending the iPhone 4, but says those who already have one can use the duct tape as a patch until another fix is announced. On July 2nd, Apple posted a public letter about the issue saying the problems were perceived, not real. But in the same statement they contradicted themselves and said a software update would fix the problem.
Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dies
Known as Major League Baseball’s bombastic boss, George Steinbrenner knew the game. Like him or hate him, he rebuilt the New York Yankees dynasty, ushering in the era of multimillion dollar salaries and accepting nothing less in return than World Series championships. Steinbrenner had his fair share of enemies, inside and outside the game, but no one could dispute his love for baseball. Steinbrenner died yesterday of a heart attack. He was 80. In 37 1/2 years as owner, Steinbrenner whipped a $10 million team into a $1.6 billion giant that became the model of a modern franchise, one with its own TV network and ballpark food business. Under his reign, the Yankees won seven World Series championships, 11 American League pennants and 16 AL East titles.
