2010 Atlantic Hurricane Names

The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season starts next Tuesday. The list of storm names rotates every six years by the World Meteorological Organization. The list of names runs from A-W; Q, U, X, Y and Z are not used. That’s usually enough to last a full season, which runs June 1-November 30th. However, so many hurricanes formed in 2005 that the entire list was used. For the first time, Greek letters were applied to the rest: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta. It was the most active hurricane season ever, with five names permanently retired – the most names ever. The updated hurricane names:

Distracted Driving

Seat belts, airbags, hands-free driving laws and devices – they’re all designed for the benefit of a responsible driver. But most of us are anything but responsible on the roads. A new survey by Jabra and Lindberg International conducted in six countries shows that, despite technology to help keep both hands on the wheel, people around the world are choosing to use their hands elsewhere while driving. The most common activities include texting, eating, changing clothes, operating GPS systems, yelling at other drivers, and even performing sexual acts while driving. To compound the issue, only 32% of respondents reported they use a hands-free device, which is the law in many regions. According to the study:

 

·       72% eat food while driving.

·       35% have taken clothes off or put clothes on while driving.

·       29% have kissed others while driving and 15% have performed sexual acts while driving.

·       28% have sent text messages while driving.

·       23% say they’ve combed their hair while behind the wheel.

·       13% have put on makeup while driving.

·       12% have written or read e-mails while driving.

·       10% reported reading newspapers or magazines while driving.

·       5% confessed to having played video games.

·       5% say they have shaved while behind the wheel.

It’s Gonna Be A Wicked And Wild Hurricane Season

The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season could be the most active since 2005, according to Weather Services International (WSI). In its latest forecast, WSI called for 18 named storms, 10 hurricanes and five intense hurricanes. That is well above 1950-2009 averages of 10 named storms, six hurricanes, and three intense hurricanes. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will release its 2010 hurricane season forecast tomorrow.

Super Bowl Headed To Meadowlands

NFL owners voted yesterday to put the 2014 Super Bowl in the new $1.6 billion Meadowlands Stadium that this season will become home to the New York Jets and Giants. It’s the first time the league has gone to a cold weather site that doesn’t have a dome; until now, those places couldn’t even bid on the big game. The coldest kickoff temperature in Super Bowl history was 39 degrees, and that would be considered a warm February day in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Average February temperatures there are 24 to 40 degrees, with several inches of rain. Also, the game kicks off after the sun goes down in the Eastern time zone, so temperatures would be dropping throughout the night. The NFL has required an average temperature of 50 degrees or a dome for a team to even bid on hosting the Super Bowl, but the league bent the rule to let New York bid.

A 13-year-old California teen became the youngest person ever to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. Jordan Romero from Big Bear, California, scaled the 29,035-foot summit from the Tibetan side – the same side a Nepali man broke his own record for the most number of successful Everest attempts. The climb put Romero one step closer to reaching his goal of climbing the highest mountains on all seven continents.

Gulf Oil Slick Looks ‘Very Scary’ From Space

The flood of oil in the Gulf of Mexico is alarming people all over the earth, and a few not on earth. The huge oil slick is growing, and astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station cringe every time they see it from space. “It’s a heartbreaking site from space,” the astronauts said. Oleg Kotov, a Russian cosmonaut, said “It looks very scary…It’s not good. I really feel… not good about that.”

Oil Spill Shuts Down 19% Of Gulf Fishing

The federal government announced yesterday it was nearly tripling the size of an area in the Gulf of Mexico that’s closed to fishing because of a massive oil spill of the coast of Louisiana. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association said it had closed nearly 46,000 square miles, or about 19% of federal waters. That’s up from the 7% of the Gulf that’s been closed to fishing boats since shortly after the offshore oil rig exploded April 20th, killing 11 workers. More than 5 million gallons of oil has leaked out into the Gulf.

Ever post a slam or otherwise ill-advised comment or photo on your Facebook wall, only to instantly regret it? According to a just-released survey from tech shopping site Retrevo, 32% of social network users admit they’ve posted something to their accounts that they later wished they hadn’t, ranging from “extreme political views” and “racy pictures” to “complaints about your boss” and other “hastily” posted content. Retrevo found that smartphone users are particularly prone to “poster’s regret,” with a full 54% copping to a mobile post that left them red-faced. The story gets even worse for iPhone users, with 59% admitting to a regrettable lapse of judgment. Of course, you could always delete your account forever and then you won’t have to worry about doing stupid stuff.

Facebook Firing

A North Carolina waitress is out of a job after griping on her Facebook page about the $5 tip she got from a couple who sat at their table for three hours. The waitress says the customers kept her at work an hour after she was supposed to clock out. The Charlotte Observer said yesterday that 22-year-old Ashley Johnson felt she was slammed after waiting on the couple at Brixx Pizza. So she blasted the couple on Facebook, calling them cheap and mentioning the restaurant by name. Brixx said she was fired because she violated a company policy banning workers from speaking disparagingly about customers and casting the restaurant in a bad light on a social network. Johnson, who is looking for a new gig, apologized to Brixx
