Valentine’s Day By The Numbers

Here are some interesting facts regarding February 14th and Valentine’s Day from TheRomantic.com.



· 110 million: The number of roses that will be sold and delivered over a three-day period surrounding Valentine’s Day. The majority will be red.



· 60%: The percentage of American roses produced in California. However, the vast number sold on Valentine’s Day in the United States are imported, mostly from South America.



· 15%: The percentage of U.S. women who send themselves flowers on Valentine’s Day.



· 73%: While 73% of men purchase flowers for Valentine’s Day, 27% of women purchase them for the occasion.



· 1 billion: Number of Valentine’s Day cards exchanged each year. That’s the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.



· One-third: Number of Valentine’s Day cards accompanied by a gift.



· 25%: Percentage of exchanged Valentine’s Day cards that are humorous.



· 50%: Percentage of Valentine’s Day cards sold the week of the holiday. The largest and most elaborate Valentine’s Day cards are sold in the 48 hours prior to February 14th.



· 650 million: Number of classmates, family members and teachers who will receive a Valentine’s Day card from children ages 6 to 10. Children came in second, followed by mothers, wives and sweethearts.



· 1,330: The number of different Hallmark card designed specifically for Valentine’s Day.



· 1866: The year candy manufacturer NECCO made the first “Conversation Hearts” – then called “Motto Hearts.” According to NECCO, 8 billion of these little candies are sold between January 1st and February 14th.



· 35 million: The number of heart-shaped boxes of chocolate that will be sold for Valentine’s Day.



· 64%: The percentage of men in the U.S. who do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine’s Day with their sweetheart.



· 1,233: Number of locations producing chocolate and cocoa products in 2007. California leads the nation with 143 such establishments, followed by Pennsylvania (115).



· 466: Number of locations that produced non-chocolate confectionary products in 2007.



· 3,643: Number of confectionery and nut stores in the United States.



· 23.8 pounds: Per capita consumption of candy by Americans in 2008.



· $403 million: The combined wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers in the United States.



· 19,759: The number of florists nationwide in 2007.



· 27,484: Number of jewelry stores in the United States as of 2007. These stores sold $2.2 billion in merchandise in February 2009.



· 2.16 million: The number of marriages that took place in the United States in 2008. That breaks down to a little less than 6,000 per day.



· 112,185: The number of marriages performed in Nevada in 2008.



· 904: The number of dating service establishments nationwide. These establishments, which include Internet dating services, employ nearly 4,300 people.



· 3%: The percentage of pet owners who will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets.
