Beer For Your Bones
The next time you tip back another brewsky, remember it could be making your bones stronger. A new analysis of 100 commercial beers shows the beverage is a significant source of dietary silicon, a key ingredient for bone health. Though past research has suggested beer is good for your bones, little was known about how silicon levels were involved. So a pair of researchers ran a chemical analysis of beer’s raw ingredients, using 100 commercially-sold beers found in the grocery store. After running a battery of tests, they found that it’s true, your bones are better and stronger after drinking beer. While there is no official recommendation for just how much beer you should consume without going overboard, the average American consumes about 20 to 50 milligrams of silicon each day. That’s seems to be enough to boost bone buildup.
