As the football season gears up, some coaches are trying to stop players from being distracted, or causing distractions, by social networking sites. Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini has spoken with his team about the dangers of social media sites after a player posted a vulgar message on his Twitter page directed at Cincinnati wide receiver Terrell Owens. Cornerback Brandon McDonald now says he regrets his trash-talking tweet. Coach Mangini says he won’t ask his players not to use sites like Twitter and Facebook, but says there will be consequences if the sites are misused. Boise State coach Chris Petersen outright banned his players from posting on Twitter for the duration of the season so it won’t cause a distraction in the Broncos’ national title chase.

A flight attendant who dramatically quit his job as a JetBlue flight attendant has bonded out of jail after paying a $2,500. The drama all went down Monday as JetBlue Flight 1052 from Pittsburgh was taxiing to a gate at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Slater tried to assist a woman who was struggling with her carry-on luggage. An argument that began in Pittsburgh erupted again in New York, when Slater said the middle-aged woman “maliciously” hit him on his head with her luggage. When Slater asked for an apology, the passenger instead cursed at him. Slater then got on the plane’s public-address system and cursed out the passenger for all to hear. Then, after declaring that 20 years in the airline industry was enough, he blurted out, “It’s been great,” grabbed some beers and bolted via the emergency chute. Slater is facing charges of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

People with multiple tattoos covering large parts of their bodies are at higher risk of getting hepatitis C and other diseases, a Canadian researcher warns. Dr. Siavash Jafari points out not only do tattoo instruments used without proper hygiene techniques pose infection risk but tattoo dyes are not kept in sterile containers. As a result, they may play a carrier role in transmitting viral infections, and pose hazards of allergic reactions, bacterial or fungal infections and possible exposure to chemical toxins. And the risks of a new trend of being tattooed with glow-in-the-dark ink are not yet known. In a study, Jafari and colleagues directly linked the incidence of hepatitis C after tattooing with the number of tattoos an individual receives.

Why Your Hubby Sleeps Through Anything

Heavy sleepers sleep through almost anything because their brains are better at fending off noises, researchers say. Scientists as Harvard University say such sleepers are able to block outside noise from getting to their brains and are more likely to manage a night of undisturbed sleep. Researchers studying brainwaves found that the mind produces pulses called “spindles” during sleep that stop noises from getting to the part of the brain that would make the sleeper aware of them. The research showed most people keep a consistent spindle rate and those with higher spindle rates were less likely to be disturbed on noisy nights.

Why Disgusting Humor Is Funny

Scientists have come up with a formula that explains why crude comedy, even when including death or moral taboos, can make people laugh. Disgusting jokes can be perceived as funny so long as they somehow come off as benign, the study finds. Researchers at the University of Colorado-Boulder have come up with three criteria they find could explain why things are funny. Peter McGraw and Caleb Warren figured the anecdote or scenario had violated some moral or social norms, be benign, and also reconcilable. They tested their hypothesis by presenting various situations to volunteers including ones like a firm hiring a rabbi as spokesman for their new line of pork products. People tended to find situations “seen as wrong” funny. The funny factor increased when people were not connected with the subject. McGraw said the rule also applies to humorous slapstick: “We laugh when Moe hits Larry because we know that Larry’s not really being hurt.”
