Surviving Hurricane Season
Hurricanes can cause millions of dollars in damage and threaten lives in coastal states. Even inland states can feel the effects of a hurricane’s power. Fortunately, you can take steps to prepare your home to weather hurricane season. Lou Manfredini, Ace Hardware’s home expert, offers some safety tips for anyone living or traveling in hurricane prone areas.
· Keep your home and belongings safe by making sure to store all items off the ground on shelves so that water doesn’t damage them.
· Block all entryways of your home to prevent floodwaters from getting in. Manfredini recommends positioning sand bags around the entryways of the house.
· Store important documents (birth certificates, insurance policies, etc) in plastic, zip-lock bags in an easily-accessible location in case you have to evacuate your home.
· If you decide to stay at home during the storm, you should gather your family in an interior room without windows, such as the basement or a hallway. It’s recommended that you use a battery-operated radio for storm updates and safety issues. There are also solar-powered options.

Cheers! Heavy Drinkers Outlive Non-Drinkers
Drink up if you want to live a few years longer. That’s the highly unusual conclusion of a new study which suggests that non-drinkers die sooner than heavy drinkers. Moderate drinkers fair the best. The paper, which appears in “Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research,” took a look at 1,824 participants over 20 years; 63% of them were men. Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin filtered out socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support and still found that nondrinkers don’t live as long as their drinking compatriots. Over the 20-year period, 69% of the nondrinkers died, 60% of the heavy drinkers died. Only 41% of the moderate drinkers died. Moderate drinking is defined as one to three drinks per day.
‘Intense’ Earl May Threaten East Coast
Forecasters said the “large and intense” Hurricane Earl was 1,000 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, at 8 p.m. [ET] last night. The center of the Category 4 storm was about 245 miles east-northeast of Grand Turk Island with top sustained winds of 135 mph, and was moving toward the northwest at 14 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. This storm is likely to take a gradual turn toward the north-northwest. A hurricane watch was posted yesterday for the East Coast from north of Surf City, North Carolina, to the North Carolina-Virginia border. Officials said communities from Virginia to New England should monitor the storm.
